NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I am pleased to announce that once again we have had 100% parent participation in our parent/teacher conferences.
As we enter the final weeks of the school year, teachers will be reviewing, re-teaching, and evaluating the objectives that have not been mastered by individual students. The school year will end on Thursday, June 5th, at 11:30 am.
We will be holding a pre-sale for our Arbor 2007 – 2008 yearbook starting Monday, April 28th through Friday, May 9th. Draft copies will be available for you to view in both offices. The cost is $5.00 during the pre-sale. Checks should be made payable to Arbor Academy.
We would like to thank our parents who have participated in the Webkinz project with Harvey’s Nest Gift Shop. This project has resulted in contributions of $179.00 so far this year and a total contribution of $737.00 since the beginning. Harvey’s Nest will be hosting a Webkinz Extravaganza this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Crafts, games and special activities will take place.
On Monday, April 28th we will have our character education assemblies at 9:00 am for
K – 3 and at 1:30 pm for 4 – 6. The character trait is good citizenship and writing trait is conventions. Please come and join us.
On Thursday, May 1st, the American Legion Post 54 will be presenting good citizenship awards to two of our sixth grade students, Allison T. and Cameron W. The presentation will take place at 7:00 pm in the Northwestern Middle School Auditorium.
On Monday, May 5th, we will be administering the NWEA test to our K – 6th grade students. The test will be administered over a three week period. The areas of the test include reading, mathematics and language usage. The 2nd – 6th grade students will also be tested in science. A letter is being sent home today with the students with additional information.
Representatives from the Family Health Center of Battle Creek will begin the free dental clinic on Monday, April 28th in the 4 – 6 building. We hope to serve all our students who have registered for the dental service by Thursday of next week.

KINDERGARTEN (Mrs. Walters/Mrs. Lutz) - This month in kindergarten we will continue working on subtraction. We will also continue working on learning about plants. We will be preparing for the end of the school year and makeing sure we are ready for first grade.
FIRST GRADE (Mrs. Hecht/Miss Ramos) - During May, we will be writing longer stories, summarizing stories and finding similarities in texts. We will be studying Japan during the month of May, too. Our first graders will be studying a dinosaur and reporting to the class about their findings. We will also study famous women in history. We will celebrate our mom's and dad's too. Miss Ramos and I will be having our annual Mom's and Dad's Day. Dates are comming soon!
FIRST GRADE (Mrs. McMurtrie/Mrs. Blakeslee) - Wow! It's almost the end of the year! We have witnessed so much growth in first grade. We are excited about the reading and writing taking place in the classroom. During May the first graders will be learning to multiply in math. (Mrs. Blakeslee and I didn't learn how to multiply until third grade! Times sure have changed.) In science the students will work on writing reports about different scientists. We will also create a class newspaper summarizing the events of the year. May will end with our annual field trip to the zoo. We hope this month brings everyone lots of sunshine!
SECOND GRADE (Mrs. Jones/Miss Sandefur) - This month is going to be very busy. In math we continue to work on our addition and subtraction facts. Our goal will be for everyone to master their facts. The class is doing great with multiplication facts and this month we will learn about division. We will also learn about decimals. We will continue to learn about life cycles in science. We may get a chance to hatch some duck eggs. We have been busy reading Zany Fairy Tale Plays and then completing writing activities to go with them. We will work on editing, revising and illustrating our work.
SECOND GRADE (Mrs. Muskovin/Mrs. Kearney) - It is hard to believe that the school year is just about over. However, we still have many fun and interesting things to learn during the month of May. In science this month, we will be starting up our unit on animal life cycles. We will be learning the life cycle of a mammal, bird, reptile, and insect. For our unit in social studies, we will be taking a tour of our country's capital and will be learning about Washington, D.C. and some of our special national monuments. In math, we are continuing to learn our multiplication facts up to five and will soon be introducing and practicing division. Since we have finished the stories in our reading series, we will now be reading chapter books.
THIRD GRADE (Miss Squires) - We have been preparing all year long for our trip to Sherman Lake YMCA Camp. We have been working on being respectful, responsible, caring, and honest. We will be rock climbing, canoeing, swimming, and shooting bows and arrows. We will be finishing up all of our academic subjects for the year. The students have learned a lot this year. Please continue to read with your child over the summer. Going over flashcards will help as well.
THIRD GRADE (Mrs. Wilkins) - This month we have a lot of exciting things happening in third grade! We are going to be taking our NWEA tests for the spring. We start testing on the 12th and end on the 15th. Each day we will take one test. Our annual trip to Sherman Lake will be on May 16th. We will be spending the day rock climbing, and canoeing. Our character education assembly will be on May 27th at 9:00. On May 29th we will be taking our school wide trip to Binder Park Zoo. We will continue to work on our class novels in reading. In math we will be multiplying 2 digit by 2 digit numbers and getting your child ready for fourth grade. In science we will be working on our last unit in health about nutrition.
FOURTH GRADE (Mrs. Lemley) - We have been busy working with the Junior Master Gardener's program. For 6 weeks we will be learning about plants, soil and the care of our earth. This is a hands-on adventure to enrich our student's understanding of their enviroment and their responsibilities to their enviroment.
FOURTH GRADE (Mrs. Myers) - This month we will be taking the spring NWEA test. Students will be able to see their growth from fall to spring. On May 13th we will be taking a field trip to "Holes the Musical" at the Kalamazoo Civic Center. In science the fourth graders will be finishing up the Junior Master Gardener program and will have the opportunity to put their skills to work.
FIFTH GRADE (Mrs. Bartz) - It is difficult to believe that the school year is almost over. We still have a lot to do before we come to the end of fifth grade. We are going to be finishing our math lessons by learning some early statistic skills. We are going to interpret different forms of data and determine the probabilty of certain events occurring. We will also be completing the material in our science books and then breaking open our science kits for some more hands-on experience! Our kits deal with the concepts of matter and simple machines and have many experiments to enhance the learning process. In social studies, we will be learning about the various wars we have had in our country's history such as, the Spanish American War up to the Cold War against the U.S.S.R. Finally, we will be working on learning how to better enhance the presentation of our final pieces of writing.
FIFTH GRADE (Mr. Crinion) - In addition to teaching new material, we have been reteaching objectives that the children have not mastered as we are "Buckling Down" in preparation of the NWEA tests. These tests will show progress of the students from the beginning of the school year. The testing window is from May 5 to May 9.
SIXTH GRADE (Mrs. Withrow) - In May we will be connecting our study of geometry in math with some fun art projects, utilizing translation, rotation, reflection, and symmetry. In health, we will explore soccer, football, tennis, and ice hockey. In language arts, we will be applying the writing skills and traits that we have been learning this year, by writing a weekly school newspaper. Most of all we will be enjoying our final few weeks together before the "Fantistic Four" sixth graders graduate from Arbor Academy.

Dear Parents,
We want to inform you of the progress our students made during the 2006-2007 school year. We constantly review each student's learning progress to be certain that we are "on track." One way we do this is by employing a widely used and nationally validated achievement test. This test is administered throughout the United States to hundreds of thousands of children annually, both at the beginning, and again at the end of the school year.
Our students have completed the spring test and we can now judge the results of our students' and out teachers' efforts this school year.
Our charts demonstrate the results in greater detail.
We welcome others to join us for the 2007 - 2008 school year!
