ARBOR HAPPENINGS!!!

December 2011

Lemley/Ireland (Fourth Grade) -

We are off to a great start of the fourth grade year!  We have a new literacy program through-out our school called the “Daily Five.”  This program promotes the building of reading and writing independence.  We are all really excited about this program and the students are developing great skills that will last a lifetime.

Fourth Graders are responsible for knowing their multiplication facts.  If your child is rusty or has not met this goal, please work with them at home.  You can make your own flash cards or pick up a pack of pre-made at The Dollar Store.

We are taking a field trip on October 7th to the Calhoun County Fairgrounds where we will be learning all about Michigan products and animals.  We will also be taking a ride on a horse and wagon.  So, this is sure to be a great trip.

In Science we are studying all about plants and animals.  We will also be participating in the Junior Master Gardener Program in the spring.  This program is community based and we will be giving back to our community with our knowledge.

The Social Studies curriculum in the fourth grade begins with learning all about our country.  We are working on the Northeast region and will be making our way west.  Students will be responsible for learning all of the states and capitals of our country by the end of the year.  This is an important task and one that takes lots of practice.

Our class will be celebrating Halloween with an afternoon party on Monday, the 31st.  Students need to bring their costumes to school with them and will change during recess.  We will send further details as the occasion gets closer.

We are looking forward to a great year.  If you have any questions please feel free to visit us in the classroom, or call us at (269) 963-5851 (ex. 14)

Mrs. Kemp/Mrs. Rafter (Fourth Grade) -

We hope all our families had a great Thanksgiving break.  Mrs. Rafter and I are very “thankful” for a great bunch of fourth graders.  Please mark your calendar, Arbor Academy’s Holiday Program is December 9th.  More information will be coming home soon.  Holiday break will begin Monday, December 19th through Tuesday, January 3rd.  School will resume Wednesday, January 4th.

In reading, we are going to continue to work on finding plot, problems and their solution, and talking about sensory words and their effect on the reader.  During Daily 5 we have started reading a new book with the class called Raymond and Graham Rule the School.  The students love the characters and their humor.

In math, we are going to continue to work on multiplication.  Memorization of multiplication facts is imperative to the success of your student in future math lessons.   We will continue working on multiplying two and three numbers throughout the month of December and introduce multiplying by four digits.  This month we will also start working on division with and without remainders.

In writing, we are working on “spicing” up our writing.  This month we will be concentrating on adding details and word choice.  Fourth graders will continue to work on identifying proper, plural, and possessive nouns.  In the month of December we will be reviewing commas in a series and verb agreement.  We will also continue to write to our pen pals in Gastonia, NC.

In social studies, we will be wrapping up our regions unit with the southwest and west.  Once the students have completed the regions unit we will be completing a research project of a famous American.  The students will be doing research, creating research questions, and presenting their famous American person to the class.

In science, we will begin our unit on weather.  Students will be compiling weather data using appropriate tools and instruments, exploring what the three factors are that influence our weather, and severe weather.

As the weather changes please make sure that your student has all their winter gear.  All students go outside every day, unless it is raining or below 10 degrees.  Students will need boots, snow pants, winter coat, gloves and hat.

Dear Parents,

We want to inform you of the progress our students made during the 2008-2009 school year. We constantly review each student's learning progress to be certain that we are "on track." One way we do this is by employing a widely used and nationally validated achievement test. This test is administered throughout the United States to hundreds of thousands of children annually, both at the beginning, and again at the end of the school year.

Our students have completed the spring test and we can now judge the results of our students' and out teachers' efforts this school year.

Our charts demonstrate the results in greater detail.

We welcome others to join us for the 2010 - 2011 school year!
